Maybe I am wrong because Im no expert for 生花 (ikebana) but Is the flower arranging in 投げ入れ (nageire) style ?

Because I think I can see the three main lines - shin, tai and soe.

Personally Im more into 水石 (suiseki) - also an art of "small pieces" ;)

Very traditional and the cropping of these piece is wonderful. The colors are subtle and not overpowering. The wrinkles on the cloth are very well done. I must +fave this.

I find the detail in the background more endearing than the woman in the foreground. The woman, however, is well done and suitable for the earth-tone colors. The little elements (floor, flowers, hanging scroll) really make the picture for me.

Also, I wonder if the Kimono can be equated to the Roman Toga? I mean this in the sense that the toga fell out of practice but was made (by law of Augustus) the official dress of the true Roman. Likewise, then, does the kimono have any special meaning to the Japanese in that way?

Hi TESM.

Thanks for your comment about this picture.
I'm glad.

Well,as you thought, Kimono has special meaning in the contemporary Japan.

In modern days, most Japanese does not wear Kimono usually.

About one hundred years ago, Kimono was worn by many many Japan people everyday as daily clothes.
However, it was not worn so much as the Western clothes infiltrated.

Now,Kimono is worn by many Japan people as special traditional dress at an initiation like a coming-of-age ceremony, a wedding, a funeral, and a traditional festival.

Incidently, only persons who engage in the Japanese traditional arts and sports, like "SaDo:Japanese tea ceremony","KaDo:arranged flower","Sumo" etc, traditionally wear Kimono usually yet.

In modern days in Japan, we often may be able to see that artists at the station or other public space.

By the way, I also wear Kimono only in my house.(^^)
